pulp cans

Project history

When I went to some Asian supermarket, I was surprised by the color palette that is quite unusual in the eyes of a European in the composition of labels for canned food products. Unlike the packaging for cans that I know, these I have come across are characterized above all by very bright colors and striking graphics that make them subtly disturbing.
Some time later I realized that this type of graphic layout was surprisingly very similar to the covers of American hard boiled novels. From this surrealist encounter that Lautreamont would not have minded, the idea of painting false labels to be used for cans to be placed on supermarket shelves was born.
Each label carries the text of an extract from the Unabomber manifesto, a delusional text that comes close to the dystopian visions linked to the critical themes of post-industrial society omnipresent in the literary genre of hard-boiled science fiction.
The choice of the Asian supermarket located in the heart of the Belleville district was determined by the long-standing presence in the collective imagination of the Belleville district, a slum place dear to French noir in literature and then obviously also in genre cinema.
